The staff members of the Civil Service Department of the City of San Bernardino strive to provide professional, courteous, and efficient service to applicants, City personnel, residents, and members of the public.
The Civil Service Commission
The Civil Service Commission is an independent body of five volunteers who are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Council. Members of the Commission include: Chairman Dennis Reichardt, Vice-Chair Curtis Stout, and Commissioners Evelyn Alexander, Jeanette Avila and Dan Carlone. Board meetings are held on the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, beginning at 9:00 a.m., in Conference Room A, located on the 4th floor of City Hall. At the Board's direction, the Chief Examiner administers a set of Rules pertaining to Classified employees, provides administrative and support services to the Board of Commissioners, and coordinates the scheduling of employee disciplinary hearings.
Civil Service Board Agendas & Minutes
The Civil Service Department provides pre-employment screening, testing, and certification services for approximately 400 job classifications in the City and the Water Department to ensure qualified workers are available to serve the needs of the Community. Pre-employment services include the review of thousands of applications each year, the development of testing standards and content, and the administration of written and performance examinations and oral board interviews. Once the screening and testing process is complete for a position, a list of eligible candidates is provided to the hiring department for use in selection and hiring.
