What is the City of San Bernardino Youth Civic Engagement Council?

The City of San Bernardino Youth Civic Engagement Council ("Youth Council") is a program for motivated high school students who are eager to learn more about the City they live in and the local government that runs it! The Youth Council provides San Bernardino youth with the opportunity to engage with City staff and elected officials to learn more about their roles in running local government. Additionally, youth will learn about the various ways they can engage civically to make a difference in their community.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Applicants must be enrolled in good standing as a sophomore or junior at either a SBCUSD high school or a charter school in San Bernardino at the time of application.
  • Applicants must reside in San Bernardino.
  • Applicants must be available to participate for the entirety of the program from September to February (a minimum of about four hours each month).

If Selected, Participants Will Have the Following Opportunities & Responsibilities:

There will be six mandatory events throughout the program, which will usually occur on the third Tuesday of each month (some meetings or local field trips will not be on the third Tuesday to accommodate a special activity or school break). These events will allow members the opportunity to shadow City staff and elected officials and participate in activities to learn about the daily functions of the City. Members will also have the opportunity to share with City staff, local leaders, and elected officials what the youth experience is in San Bernardino.

The meeting dates will be as follows: 

- Tuesday, September 17, 2024.

- Either the October 2, 2024, or October 16, 2024, Mayor and City Council Meeting for the swearing in ceremony. 

- Tuesday, November 19, 2024. 

- Tuesday, December 3, 2024.

- Tuesday, January 21, 2024.

- Tuesday, February 18, 2024.
