The primary assignment for all Reserve Police Officers is uniformed patrol. Service to the community as a patrol officer has been the foundation of the existence of our reserve program for over 50 years.
All trainee Level-I Reserve Police Officers must complete the standard departmental Field Training Program and complete a 400 hour patrol evaluation period before becoming eligible to seek California POST certification as a Level-I Reserve Police Officer.
Trainee Level-II Reserve Police Officers start their training in the departmental Field Training Program. The career path for Level-II officers is often customized based on the officer's interest, goals, and the needs of the Police Department.
After completing a departmental Field Training Program and with the approval of the Reserve Program Coordinator, and in most cases the appropriate Unit Supervisor, a certified Level-I or a trained Level-II Reserve Police Officer may seek assignment to the following special duty positions:
-
Background Investigator
-
Bicycle Mounted Enforcement Team (BMET) Officer
-
Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Officer
-
Detective Bureau Investigator
-
DUI Task Force
-
Graffiti Task Force Officer
-
Mounted Enforcement Team Officer
-
Multiple Enforcement Team (Gang Detail) Officer
-
Range Master/Armour
-
Regional Auto Theft (SANCATT) Task Force Officer
-
Tactical Medic or Tactical Physician (SWAT Auxiliary)
-
Traffic Officer (non-motorcycle)
-
Vice or Narcotics Officer
-
Warrant/Fugitive Detail Officer
Assignment to many of these assignments is competitive and positions may be limited. Skills, job performance, education, and seniority may play a role in the selection process. Skill level and tenured general patrol experience are key factors to successful placement in these specialty assignments. Time in these assignments depends on a variety of factors.
