A PROCLAMATION
OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL PROCLAIMING MAY 2024 AS
ASIAN AMERICAN NATIVE HAWAIIAN PACIFIC ISLANDER (AANHPI) MONTH
IN THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO

WHEREAS, Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage Month (AANHPI) is observed annually in May; and,

WHEREAS, our City wishes to pay tribute to the generations of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders in our community; this month provides us an opportunity to reflect on the vibrant culture and innumerable contributions AANHPI residents make to our community; and,

WHEREAS, the national theme for AANHPI Heritage Month 2024 is “Advancing Leaders Through Innovation”, we encourage greater participation, inclusion, and leadership training for our AANHPI residents, acknowledging they will be instrumental to the future success of our City; and,

WHEREAS, in 2022, the City of San Bernardino residents elected the first Vietnamese American female mayor in the history of the United States; and,

WHEREAS, the history of Asian Americans, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islanders is filled with stories of resilience, persistence, and determination, we value AANHPI citizens as an integral part of the fabric of our community; and,

WHEREAS, Belvedere Elementary School's Trilingual Language Immersion program provides all students with an opportunity to become bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish while also introducing Vietnamese as a third language; and,

WHEREAS, as we celebrate AANHPI Heritage Month, we must also redouble our commitment to combating the surge of anti-Asian hate crimes. San Bernardino must be a safe place for all AAPI citizens, and a city where they have an opportunity to thrive.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that, the Mayor & City Council of the City of San Bernardino, do hereby designate May 2024, as Asian American Native Hawaiian Pacific Islander Heritage (AANHPI) Month. We further encourage our residents to explore AANHPI history, culture, and accomplishments and to support local events commemorating this rich heritage.
