Closed on Wednesday, June 19,
in Observance of Juneteenth
Libraries, nearby parks, and local colleges will be holding events and activities.
Juneteenth (full name Juneteenth National Independence Day, also known as Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Liberation Day) is a holiday in the United States on June 19. It is a memory of June 19, 1865, when the slaves in Texas got their freedom and commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The name Juneteenth is a short form of June nineteenth. It became a recognized federal holiday in June, 2021 when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
There are a number of events taking place in observance of Juneteenth in San Bernardino and nearby communities. Below is a list of several of them.

Tuesday, June 18 - Feldheym Main Library - 555 W. 6th Street - 4:00 pm - Join the Feldheym Library for a kid focused Juneteenth Celebration. The festivities will include Juneteenth themed coloring and book giveaway (while supplies last).
Wednesday, June 19 – Cal State San Bernardino – 5500 University Parkway San Bernardino, CA 92407 Love4Us Juneteenth Freedom Celebration – https://love4usjuneteenth.com/ - The all-day event that will include details about an academic pathway to the university, seminars, a musical performance by Goldie Woods, a kids’ zone, and a marketplace with more than 100 vendors across campus.
Thursday, June 20 – Akoma Unity Center – 1367 N. California St, San Bernardino, CA 92411 - 6:00 - 8:00 pm - In honor of Juneteenth, a screening of the film “Voices from The Bridges That Carried Us Over: Stories of Civil Rights in San Bernardino” will be held. This event is not just a film screening but a celebration of the rich history and everlasting spirit of the civil rights movement in the Black community. Through gaining historical knowledge from longtime community members such as former Assemblymembers Wilmer “Amina” Carter and Cheryl Brown, this premiere will share an in-depth look into our history.
The premiere will feature powerful stories from those who lived through pivotal moments in the fight for civil rights within the city of San Bernardino, as well as contemporary reflections on the continued struggle for equality and justice. In addition to the screening, we will showcase a collection of poetry and art inspired by the movement, created by talented local artists and writers.
The evening will be an opportunity to reflect, celebrate, and connect with others who share a commitment to social justice and human rights. We believe that sharing these stories through film, poetry, and art can foster a deeper understanding and inspire action within our community.
