San Bernardino Celebrates 20th Anniversary
of Sister City Relationship with Goyang, South Korea
Last week, San Bernardino sent a collection of art and vases to Goyang, South Korea in celebration of the twentieth anniversary of its Sister City relationship. Goyang, located in the Gyeonggi Province, became a Sister City of San Bernardino in 2003 and is one of eleven such international relationships that the City enjoys. It is a satellite city of Seoul and has a population of just under 1.1 million residents.
The donated art depicts native vegetation from San Bernardino. It will be showcased at the International Horticulture Goyang, Korea 2023, an international flower exhibition considered to be South Korea’s premier international flower exhibition, showcasing flowers and various products made with flowers from over 30 countries.
The art was donated by Arts and Historical Preservation Commissioner, Steven Bielak and More Leaders Art Founder, Adam Aguilar. The vases were made by Alcira Mendoza, including one created at the Garcia Center for the Arts and dedicated to the memory of the Center’s founder Ernie Garcia, who recently passed. The vases have flower impressions from the Garcia Center’s garden.
The Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department led this effort to commemorate the anniversary.
