Assembly Member James Ramos and
San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran Issue
Joint Statement Celebrating Lunar New Year
In honor of the Lunar New Year, taking place this year starting Sunday January 22, California Assembly Member James Ramos and San Bernardino Mayor Helen Tran have issued a joint statement in celebration of this important holiday in many Asian communities.
“The Lunar New Year is a cause for celebration for so many in the Asian community and beyond. It is a time to come together, look forward with hope to the arrival of spring, and the promise of a new year,” said Ramos and Tran. “In that spirit, we join together in celebration of the new year with a message of unity, joy, and hope for our region and all of California.”
Lunar New Year is one of the most important celebrations of the year among Eastern and Southeast Asian cultures. It reflects the new year on the lunisolar calendar. It is the most important holiday in China, and also widely observed throughout Asia and within our Asian-American communities. In some countries, the Lunar New Year celebration lasts for fifteen days.
This year marks the Year of the Rabbit (or Year of the Cat in some countries). Every year, an animal is attributed on a twelve-year rotating cycle with traits and symbols that hold meaning for what’s to come in the new year. The rabbit is a symbol of longevity, peace, and prosperity.
James Ramos represents the 45th California Assembly District, which includes the cities of San Bernardino, Fontana, Highland, Mentone, Muscoy, Redlands, and Rialto. He is the first and only California Native American serving in the state Legislature.
Helen Tran was elected in November 2022 as Mayor of San Bernardino. She is the first Vietnamese female mayor elected in the United States.
