Downtown Redevelopment Progresses with Auction at Former Carousel Mall

Residents, businesses can own pieces of San Bernardino’s history

Work is in full swing as the City of San Bernardino continues to move toward a renaissance, and on May 11, 2018 at 1 p.m. an auction will be held at Carousel Mall. This next step in the downtown redevelopment gives residents and businesses the opportunity to purchase a piece of Carousel Mall history, including the famed carousel itself. Historical items have already been donated to the San Bernardino Historical Museum to be preserved and displayed.

“Redevelopment of the Carousel Mall to better Downtown is a priority based on residents’ feedback and as such, is priority for the City,” said Andrea Miller, city manager of San Bernardino. “The first steps to a Downtown revitalization have already taken place with approximately $1 billion in investment that includes the transit center, a new courthouse, and the theater. Carousel Mall’s transformation is a natural next step.”

Future site plans may include new restaurants, retail, office building and housing on the same lot where Carousel Mall stands today. The mall began to struggle in the early 1990s and finally closed in 2017 after 15 years without anchor stores. It is part of a nationwide trend where upwards of 25 percent of all malls are being repurposed.

Items for auction include:

  • A 36’ Classic Carousel Amusement Ride, with 16 Chance/Allan Herschell style jumping horses, deluxe dentzel style scenery and 2 chariots, colors blue/white
  • Gift shop with holiday cards for all seasons, various gifts, snow globes, glass figurines, clocks, and more
  • Complete kitchen items to include, freezers, mixers, ovens, deep fryers, tables and chairs from two restaurants
  • Display cases of all sizes from different stores
  • Complete disposal of administration offices, desks, chairs
  • Seasonal decorations, pots and planters
  • 15 Carousel paintings of different carousel horses
